For instance, on my way to my class at Bikram Hot yoga, I noticed two sets of punks on the subway. It set me thinking- what are they trying to express and with whom are they trying to connect?
There has to be a story behind it. So, stay tuned and one of these days, my curiosity will certainly churn some interesting interviews.
Meanwhile, try exploring the whole idea of " how our image communicates". Well, its no different from the first impression is the last impression proverb that has been handed down to us from our parents and grandparents. We are constantly creating impressions about ourselves, consciously or unconsciously. The world around us actually identifies us through these impressions.
Think about this: If you took a bus to work every single morning during peak hours and all you did was read a novel on the way, you were unconsciously communicating the fact that you work and that you like to read. It could also communicate that you don't use your cellphone so much or you don't have one. Now, what kind of novels you read is another possible impression you could be conveying. And mind you, this is all while you are silently reading....enjoying your book.
These are non-verbal cues.
I was reading this bookon Popular Culture by John Fiske and was intrigued by the semiotic richness of jeans, in the sense that they cannot have a single defined meaning but they are a resource bank of potential meanings. Based on where, when and how are jeans worn (which country, at what occasion and what label or cut), they will reflect a different message.
So, this brings me to the latest trend on " Dress Down" at work place. How is it changing the corporate work place attitude? Any comments on how you feel about dressing down on Fridays?
